Big Foot
During my teenage days, one phobia I had was shopping for shoes.
Not that I was fuzzy but I had a problem getting shoes that fit. My feet were growing real fast! By the time I was 15, I needed a size 7 or 8 already whereas all my grown sisters as well as my mum were only wearing a size 5 or 6.
In the olden days, small dainty feet were one of the perfect 10 criteria in a luck-bearing daughter-in-law. So obviously my mum was rather concerned. Moreover, at that time, ladies with size 7 feet were considered abnormal - gigantic. I dreaded the times I had to buy shoes. It was so embarrassing each time having to tell the shop assistant my size.
They would glance at my feet making me feel such an alien and then replied “sorry, we don’t have such big size”.
However, now I’ve grown to accept this “imperfection” and have also outgrown this embarrassment when I walked into a shoe shop. At the same time, I noticed that the average people’s feet have grown too! For instance, my nieces who are now in their teens, are already sporting size 9 & 10 shoes! So I am quite normal after all. ![]()
