Best is Yet to Come
As soon as I was of age, my mum encouraged me to get my driving licence but it was only 10 years later when I finally could afford a car of my own. Since day one when I started working, I was a very loyal supporter of the public transport (not that I have a choice). On hot sunny days, I had to blaze the heat walking to the bus stands and during the stormy seasons had to weather the rain, getting drenched like a wet duck. Not to mention the hours spent waiting for the bus during peak hours.
Finally my mum felt it was time I consider getting a car. Of course a new car was out of the question. I could only afford to commit a small budget for a car so as not to disrupt the other family commitments. We were overjoyed when our neighbour’s uncle wanted to sell his 2nd hand car for a mere RM2,000.00. Now the best is yet to come
We eagerly waited for the day uncle brought the buggy to our house for viewing. And then the surprises started to unfold -
It fitted my budget alright but doubt if it was capable to take me to the next junction let alone the office before it broke down. Can imagine myself having to spend more time crying for help than driving the car. However, uncle very confidently assured me that the car was most reliable and should serve me well to and fro office. And most suitable for a new driver like me - didn’t have to worry about denting the car!
Anyway, somehow they managed to convince me into the deal and I became the “proud” owner of a “new” old car. When I finally took possession of the buggy, more surprises were in store -
Despite all the surprises, it did served its purpose. At least for the first time I had my very own car. Old or antique or vintage, it saved me from the long waits and scrambling for buses though it did gave me quite a number of heart attacks when it decided to “rest” during traffic jams or heavy rains. However, thru it I’ve learnt that there are still good samaritans in the world - people who had helped me when my car stalled. Also, it provided me the tool to brush up my driving skills and saved me the agony of getting too many dents and bumps on my new car.
I used it for a couple of years before passing it on to a mechanic for a mere RM500.00 because the car was so old already that it was only worth as scrap value. But I believed the mechanic must have resold it as I saw the little old buggy rolling along the highway one day with a full load of passengers! Well, wonder if I had kept it longer it could have been sold as vintage?.
