Culture Shock ?East Meets West
For the Chinese, rice is our staple diet. Normally, each person is served a bowl of white rice and a few dishes of cuisine and a soup are laid out on the table to be shared with everyone to eat with the rice.
For one who has never been exposed to the western eating culture, the 1st experience can be most embarrassing yet memorable and funny too, as my sister-in-law discovered.
On getting her first paycheck, she and her colleague decided to give themselves a treat with their very first western dining. As both could not figure out much from the long list in the menu, they decided it wise to go for the set. Order placed, they then sat back to wait anxiously for the food.
After a while, the waiter appeared with the soup.?.umm? that was fast. The soup smelled good! Now for the rest of the dishes. They waited and waited but the rest of the food never came.
They saw the waiter came by their table twice but just walked away without serving the rest of the food. How strange! The soup was already cold. They were beginning to get agitated. Finally, they decided to call the waiter to ask why the rest of the food took so long to prepare. The waiter replied “Ma’am, I was waiting for you to finish the soup before serving the next course”. ??.. ![]()
